New Europe held an advocacy visit to Japan
30 May 2024, 16:35

The New Europe Center held its second advocacy visit to Japan since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

From 27 to 30 May, a number of high-ranking meetings (including at the level of deputy ministers) were held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Justice, the Japanese National Security Council, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Finance, influential and active parliamentarians, in state structures responsible for trade and development assistance – JETRO vice president and JICA regional leadership, leading experts and media.

According to Alyona Getmanchuk, Director of “New Europe”, it was very important to recharge Japanese partnership in support of Ukraine in various formats on the eve of a number of important international events – the G7 Summit, the Peace Summit in Switzerland, the Berlin Conference on Reconstruction – and to explain the Ukrainian vision of priorities.

“In detail, taking into account the Japanese specifics, we discussed the needs for strengthening our air defense, confiscation of Russian assets, Japan’s ability to help us hold a more representative Peace Summit, the idea of which, from the Japanese point of view, was originated during the G7 summit in Hiroshima last year, the opportunity to help us survive the winter from an energy point of view. On most issues there is an understanding of how to move and at what pace, on the most complex we work further”, Alyona Getmanchuk summed up .

The New Europe Center has been making project-based efforts to develop the Ukraine-Japan partnership since 2021. Over the past four years, we have managed to organise four forums, prepare eight analytical materials and more than ten infographics on Ukrainian-Japanese relations. More details about the project “Special Global Partnership. Ukraine and Japan in the context of Russian war” is here.

The advocacy visit to Japan was carried out by the New Europe Center in partnership with ICUV (International Center for Ukrainian Victory) with the support of the “Renaissance” International Foundation.
