Will North Korea Become a Pillar for the Kremlin in Its War Against NATO?

The experience of modern warfare that the North Korean army is gaining in the Russia–Ukraine war, along with military-technical support from Russia, will have long-term consequences for regional security. The Beijing–Moscow–Pyongyang alliance is taking on dangerous features both for Europe’s security and for East Asia.

Nataliya Butyrska, Associate Senior Fellow at the New Europe Center, reflects on the consequences of Kim Jong Un’s participation in the military parade in Beijing, the demonstration of the China–Russia–North Korea triangle, and the strengthening of military-political coordination among authoritarian states on the pages of the Mirror of the Week.

In her analytical commentary, the expert emphasizes North Korea’s role in the war against Ukraine and its strategic coordination with Russia, noting that Pyongyang “has made a choice in favor of supporting Russia and China, no longer attempting to balance relations between them and the United States.” Kim Jong Un’s debut at a multilateral event was intended to demonstrate that North Korea “is not an isolated state, but a close ally of China and Russia.” This enables Pyongyang “to secure the support of Beijing and Moscow in overcoming sanctions and international isolation, as well as to increase pressure on the United States and its Asian allies.”
