Adapting the accession process to the geopolitical realities is essential for a credible and result-oriented enlargement.
Leo Litra, Senior Fellow at New Europe Center, spoke at the CEPS Ideas Lab on the interlink between security and enlargement. He underlined that the current enlargement methodology was developed for peacetime and needs to be revisited to re-energize the accession process.
Litra highlighted that the enlargement for Ukraine is not only about reforms in fundamentals, which are the basis of progress, but also an important security guarantee for Ukraine and for the EU. He called on the EU states to be creative about the accession process, as this will greatly help to continue reforms in the country and help end the war in Ukraine.
