NEC Senior Fellow Leo Litra on August 26 spoke at the European Forum Alpbach on the steps to be taken by the EU to become a security provider for Ukraine and other candidate states.

He mentioned that in today’s context Ukraine’s security depends on the support of the EU and Europe’s security depends on Ukraine’s ability to defend.

The best way for the EU to be a security provider is to get Ukraine is the EU. However, since membership of Ukraine is not going to happen in the next years, it is important that Ukraine gets a fast track military support. This entails not only delivery of weapons but also funds to develop Ukraine’s own production and joint ventures aimed to coproduce military articles.

The European Forum Alpbach is an interdisciplinary platform for science, politics, business and culture, which influences key actors throughout the European continent to facilitate their learning and decisions. For 80 years, it has brought together students, thinkers, and changemakers to ask: What kind of Europe do we want?

The Forum was founded in 1945, aftermath of World War II. Nowadays, more than 4,000 people from over 70 countries accept the invitation to participate in the European Forum Alpbach each year.
