“The issue of democratic reforms and adherence to anti-corruption strategy in Ukraine’s governance will be less important for the administration of the next U.S. president Donald Trump than it was for Joe Biden. However, these issues may become convenient pretexts to deny Kyiv certain requests.”
This was stated by Alyona Getmanchuk, Director of New Europe Center, in a comment for the Mirror of the Week.
“For Trump and his closest circle, democratic reforms are indeed less of a priority than for the Democratic administration and Joe Biden personally, for whom corruption has been and remains the main association with Ukraine”, the expert noted.
According to Alyona Getmanchuk, one should not expect that the issue will disappear from the agenda, since Republicans, who have also gained the majority in the U.S. Congress, may even more strictly use concerns about corruption spread in Ukraine and lack of rule of law as convenient reasons to say “no” to Ukraine on important security matters.
