“The anti-Ukrainian campaign in Hungary, aimed at blocking our course within the EU, demonstrates that Ukraine needs a ‘coalition of the resolute’ not only in the security dimension but also in European integration. This requires influential voices in EU member states that can explain to their citizens the benefits of EU enlargement, thereby reducing the impact of populist and manipulative narratives. Such an approach would help prevent the spread of the ‘Orbán syndrome’ to other EU countries.”
Sergiy Solodkyy, First Deputy Director of the New Europe Center, noted in a comment to RFI. As an option, he suggests creating a ‘coalition of the resolute’ on European integration issues, similar to the one in the security sector. There, leaders could communicate regarding Ukraine’s and other candidate countries’ accession, discuss the benefits, and, as Solodkyy says, “undermine the ground beneath the feet of populist and manipulative politicians.”
Moreover, the expert emphasizes that the risk is growing that more countries like Hungary will appear. He calls for proactive measures to prevent the ‘Orbán syndrome’ from spreading to other EU member states.
