“If NATO member states are beginning to declare their positions, it means that Ukraine’s invitation to NATO is a subject of real discussions. At least behind closed doors.”
This was stated by Alyona Getmanchuk, Director of the New Europe Center, during an interview on Radio NV.
According to Alyona Getmanchuk, the keys to Ukraine’s invitation to NATO lie in the Oval Office at the White House. Therefore, the main goal is to unblock the invitation process in Washington.
“During the transitional period between invitation and full NATO membership in Ukraine’s case, political guarantees alone will not be enough. It is necessary to simultaneously create a ‘Coalition of the Resolute’ — countries that can additionally provide protection in this most vulnerable period with their military components”, emphasized Alyona Getmanchuk.
The expert also spoke about whether it is really worth trusting the list of countries opposing Ukraine’s NATO membership, what NATO is saying about the situation in Ukraine, who will guarantee security during the period between invitation and membership, whether a European contingent might appear in Ukraine, and what unexpected statements NATO might make regarding Ukraine’s accession.
