“The establishment of a military alliance with North Korea creates additional challenges for Ukraine and threatens to escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The Kremlin dictator is interested in igniting local conflicts worldwide to disperse the forces of the U.S. and its allies.”

Natalia Butyrska, Associated Senior Fellow at the New Europe Center, analyzes in detail on the pages of Mirror of the Week the threats posed by the Russia–North Korea military alliance—not only to Ukraine but also to other countries.

The article highlights concerns such as the “national security threat to the U.S. not seen since the Korean War” (according to Victor Cha, former U.S. National Security Advisor), South Korea’s fears about North Korea acquiring advanced technologies for its missile, nuclear, and space programs, and the formation of an axis of evil aimed at destabilizing the situation in Asia.

“During their meeting, Putin and Kim Jong Un signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty, which includes a provision that ‘in the event of aggression against one party, the other shall provide all necessary assistance in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter and the national legislation of Russia and North Korea.’ In this way, Putin legitimizes and ensures the long-term prospects of military-technical cooperation with North Korea to wage war against Ukraine while simultaneously attempting to deter South Korea and other allies from providing military support to Ukraine”, emphasizes Natalia Butyrska.

According to the author, the hesitations and timid steps by Western countries in supporting Ukraine, combined with the lack of a clear strategy to defeat Russia, have allowed Moscow not only to withstand economically and set up military supplies from North Korea but also to legitimize illegal actions and violations of international law by creating its own parallel “legal framework.”
