On May 24, 2018, the New Europe Center organized the public discussion “How Ukraine should deal with Germany under the new-old coalition”.
The discussion attended by Ernst Reichel, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ukraine; Andreas von Schumann, Director of Bureau for political communication, German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ); Alyona Getmanchuk, New Europe Center director; Vasyl Khymynets, director of the First Territorial Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine; Olena Stakhurska, Deputy of chairman of the German-Ukrainian Chamber of Industry & Commerce.
NEC policy memo on Ukraine’s relations with Germany and the report “Ukraine through the eyes of Germany”, prepared by the GIZ will also be presented and discussed at the event.
Engage with German states (Bundesländer), especially in the East, where support to Ukraine is lower than in the central government. Include the capitals of the states to the itineraries of Ukrainian delegations of politicians and civil society representatives. Invite the leaders of the states to Ukraine in order to explore the potential of the cooperation, as well as to visit Donbas. The recommendations on the decentralization reform of Georg Milbradt, Special Envoy for reforms in Ukraine and ex-Prime Minister of Saxony, should be taken into account. His engagement in the reform process in Ukraine should be portrayed as the beginning of former Eastern Bundesländer’s heads engagement in the reform process in Ukraine, rather than the end of this experiment.
