The New Europe Center and the Prospect Foundation (Taiwan) organised a joint expert event, during which analysts of our Centre shared with Taiwanese colleagues their assessments of the current security situation, diplomatic challenges and external support for Ukraine in the context of Russian aggression.
Sergiy Solodkyy, First Deputy Director of the Centre, welcomed the participants and emphasised:
“It is extremely important that all democracies of the world look for ways to strengthen each other. Sometimes it may seem that the interaction of savages is more effective than the partnership of democracies. Our goal is to facilitate dialogue and cooperation among democracies to support Ukraine.”
The Centre was also represented at the event by Leonid Litra, Senior Research Fellow (who delivered a keynote presentation), and Natalia Butyrska, Associated Senior Fellow. They shared with their colleagues their vision of the key challenges associated with Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Participants discussed such topics:
– military and diplomatic challenges for Ukraine;
– enhancing international support;
– the role of China in war against Ukraine.
Leonid Litra, Senior Research Fellow, noted:
“There are no indications that the current negotiations between Ukraine and Russia will yield any meaningful outcomes soon. Russia is already conducting a new offensive, which offers a clear understanding that peace is not part of the Russian plans. The weakness of the West and the toleration of Russia’s attacks against Ukrainian cities and people is taken by Moscow as an opportunity to escalate even more. Only a coordinated and strong response to Russia can bring practical results in achieving peace.”
The New Europe Center has been actively working to strengthen Ukraine’s partnerships with key democratic actors in Asia. As part of these efforts, the think tank conducted advocacy visits to Tokyo and Seoul in February this year, organized the Fifth Ukraine–Japan Forum, and published a range of analytical materials.
Prospect Foundation is a leading Taiwanese think tank, which specializes in researching issues in international relations and economy. The Director of the Foundation is Tan Sun Chen – Minister of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan in 2004-2006.
The participation of New Europe Center’s experts in the event was made possible thanks to the project support of the International Renaissance Foundation. The opinions of the experts expressed during the event reflect their position, which does not necessarily coincide with the position of the International Renaissance Foundation.
