Enough with the mantra of “Putin will not agree to this”

“It is difficult to imagine a just and lasting peace with reliable security for Ukraine without shedding the specter of “Putin will not agree to this.” However, it is easy to envision transforming the “coalition of the willing” into a “coalition of the determined” and adopting the most ambitious security decisions for Ukraine once this coalition moves from a format of seeking permissions to one of informing Russia — and not necessarily in advance.”

Alyona Getmanchuk, Director of the New Europe Center, reflects in Ukrainska Pravda on shifting the discussion about security guarantees for Ukraine from a concept to an actionable plan. The author emphasizes that the international community must make decisions guided by security interests rather than by expectations of Russia’s consent.
