“The notion that “time is on the Russian side” betrays a lack of strategic patience and, even more importantly, squandered opportunities to exploit Moscow’s growing structural vulnerabilities. Sustained, predictable assistance for Ukraine is more likely to generate a stable political settlement than one-sided compromises that sow resentment and instability”

After nearly four years of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the myth of the Kremlin’s “endurance” does not stand up to reality. In the new analytical commentary prepared by Leonid Litra, Senior Research Fellow at New Europe Center, Visiting Fellow at ECFR, and Jana Kobzova, Co-director of European Security Programme, Senior Policy Fellow at ECFR, explain why the assumption that “time is on Russia’s side” is a strategic mistake for the West.

The commentary calls on Western leaders to shift their approach: from managing the war to strategically exploiting Russia’s vulnerabilities through stronger sanctions enforcement and deeper defence integration with Ukraine.

“By complementing intense diplomatic efforts with increased military and economic pressure on the Kremlin, the West can shatter the illusion of Russia’s endurance. In doing so, it can steer this war toward a settlement that brings real peace and deters future aggression”, the authors emphasize.
