“Putin miscalculated by betting on Kyiv’s isolation — on the assumption that the West would eventually abandon its support for Ukraine. This is one of the key conclusions of the NATO Summit in Ankara, which recognized Ukraine’s contribution to Euro-Atlantic security and guaranteed long-term military assistance”
This was stated by Sergiy Solodkyy, Director of the New Europe Center, in an interview with the Italian media outlet Fanpage.it.
“The real innovation of the NATO Summit lies not only in the scale of support, but also in its predictability. The fact that military and financial assistance will continue fundamentally changes the strategic framework. Since the beginning of Russia’s aggression in 2014, the Kremlin has built its entire strategy on one assumption: that sooner or later, the West would grow tired of supporting Ukraine,” Sergiy Solodkyy explained.
“The summit in Turkey is a genuine turning point. It demonstrates tangible change. NATO summits have often ended with important political declarations but without practical commitments from partners. In Ankara, however, we saw both immediate and long-term decisions. This is exactly what Ukraine has been calling for over many years”, the Director of the New Europe Center noted.
“Ukraine is no longer merely a country that needs protection — it has become a cornerstone of Euro-Atlantic security”, Sergiy Solodkyy emphasized.
Asked whether Ukraine’s hopes for NATO membership remain realistic, the analyst replied: “Ukraine’s recent history shows that many things once considered impossible have become reality. Ten years ago, it seemed unimaginable that Ukraine would begin its accession process to the European Union. NATO’s own history is also a history of change and decisions that once appeared impossible. Today, Ukraine possesses unique experience in modern warfare — drones, electronic warfare, technological innovation, and rapid battlefield adaptation. All of this can strengthen Europe’s security as a whole”.
“If Washington expects Europeans to assume greater responsibility for their own security, it should also support Ukraine’s accession to NATO. That would be the most effective way to strengthen the European pillar of the Alliance”, Sergiy Solodkyy concluded.
