On July 9-11, 2024, the 75th anniversary NATO summit was held in Washington. The New Europe Center in partnership with ICUV (International Centre for Ukrainian Victory), National Interest Advocacy Network “ANTS, the Anti-Corruption Action Center visited the US capital.

Alyona Getmanchuk, Director of the New Europe Center and Leonid Litra, Senior Research Fellow of the New Europe Center, during their visit to Washington spoke at all levels about the urgent needs of Ukraine in air defense, the removal of all restrictions on strikes on the territory of the Russian Federation and the creation of an anti-missile shield over Western and Southern Ukraine.

The New Europe team took part in numerous meetings and events that accompanied the summit. In particular, had meeting wtih Antony Blinken, US Secretary of State, had meeting wtih Elbridge Colby, the most influential strategist of the Republican Party, an ally of the current US presidential candidate Donald Trump, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense of the United States, spoke in a discussion organized by GMF in partnership with Brookings, dedicated exclusively to Ukraine-NATO relations before and after the summit, took part in NATO Public Forum.

“It is unlikely that more could be done this time on the Ukrainian side, given that even the wording about Ukraine’s “irreversible path” to NATO has gnawed its teeth for months”, Alyona Getmanchuk says about the results of the NATO summit.

According to Alyona Getmanchuk, nothing prevents Ukraine from further explaining and proving in the United States why, without real security guarantees, Ukrainian society will not accept a single “negotiation settlement,” which this time was openly mentioned at almost every meeting. And that a war without such guarantees will never truly end. And why, in the end, providing such guarantees to Ukraine is in the interests of the United States itself. “Actually, we traditionally did this already at separate meetings in Washington and side events that accompanied the summit,” Alyona Getmanchuk notes.

“We tried to explain why additional air defense systems and missiles to them, for which we are certainly grateful, and the decision on which should have been much earlier – only painkillers, and we need medicines to work with sources of “pain”- permission to strike at the territory of the Russian Federation and the creation of an air defense shield over Western and partly Southern Ukraine. We continue to work on this regardless of the dynamics of the campaign in the United States“, Alyona Getmanchuk summed up.

We would like to remind that on the eve of the Washigton NATO summit, the New Europe Center had conducted an active advocacy campaign aimed at Ukraine’s swift invitation to join the Alliance.

As part of this campaign, the New Europe Center has prepared the following analytical materials:
