Europe’s Security Begins with Supporting Ukraine
16 October 2026, 11:19

“By supporting Ukraine, we are protecting our own security interests. Today, in the face of the threat posed by Russia. Tomorrow, to build a new European security architecture.

The Ukrainian army, its combat experience, its innovation, and its resilience will strengthen Europe’s military capabilities in the future. Our task is to ensure that it never stands alone”.

Benjamin Haddad, Minister Delegate for Europe, French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, addressed the participants of the 5th Ukraine–France Forum, stressing the importance of continued support for Ukraine, strengthening European security and advancing Ukraine’s path towards European Union membership.

Key takeaways from his speech:

  • Ukraine’s security is directly linked to Europe’s security. Russian aggression extends beyond the battlefield to include cyberattacks, sabotage, disinformation and interference in democratic processes. Supporting Ukraine is therefore part of protecting European countries and societies.
  • Europe is stepping up its support for Ukraine and taking greater responsibility for its own security. Benjamin Haddad highlighted the role of European assistance, the Coalition of the Willing and cooperation with partners, including Canada, Australia and Japan. Key priorities include security guarantees, defence production and coordination of joint efforts.
  • Ending Russian aggression requires increasing pressure on the Kremlin. Russia continues to reject meaningful diplomacy and put forward maximalist demands. The response should include stronger military support for Ukraine and increased economic pressure, including new sanctions.
  • France supports Ukraine’s defence capabilities and resilience. Areas of assistance include the delivery of combat aircraft, the development of defence production and support for energy infrastructure ahead of winter. France is also allocating resources to healthcare and helping restore the capacity of Ukrainian hospitals.
  • Ukraine’s reconstruction is, above all, an investment in people. Rebuilding the country means not only restoring infrastructure but also supporting educators, social workers, healthcare professionals and other specialists who help communities return to normal life.
  • Ukraine’s European integration must be grounded in reforms. Haddad emphasised the importance of progress in EU accession negotiations and continued reforms in the areas of the rule of law and anti-corruption. These reforms are essential not only for EU membership but also for strengthening Ukrainian institutions, democracy and public trust in the state.
  • Ukraine must not be left alone in the face of Russian aggression. Its military experience, technological innovation and resilience can become important pillars of Europe’s future security system.
