Interview with Nataliya Butyrska, Associate Senior Fellow at the New Europe Center
20 February 2026, 10:44

“The only real way to change China’s position on Russia’s war is to impose a high cost on Beijing for supporting Moscow, because China is critically dependent on trade with the West and has much to lose. However, neither the United States nor European countries are currently ready to introduce such harsh measures, as they themselves are economically dependent on Chinese markets and resources.”

We are sharing an interview with Nataliya Butyrska, Associate SeniorFellow at the New Europe Center, on the program “Subjective, but True.”

Our thanks to Hanna Hopko, Chairwoman, National Interests Advocacy Network (ANTS), for the conversation.

During the interview, Nataliya Butyrska:

  • explained the role of North Korea in Russia’s war against Ukraine, emphasizing that Pyongyang is openly sending its troops and equipment, while receiving technological and resource benefits from Russia in return;
  • highlighted that Kim Jong Un is using the war to strengthen both domestic and international legitimacy;
  • elaborated on China’s role, noting that it supports Russia, supplies critical components, and uses the war to weaken Euro-Atlantic unity and advance its own vision of the global order.
